At the beginning of January, we celebrated Oliver's first birthday in Portland at Tony's parents house. Have you ever seen a Korean first birthday party? It's awesome! There are a few items placed on a table, and then the baby comes and chooses whatever attracts him. The item he chooses symbolizes some future meaning for the child's life.
We always love a good excuse to wear our hanbok!
Here he goes! It was actually a pretty funny moment... Oliver went right around the table to us instead of choosing something. We tried again, and kept encouraging him to pick an item but he was really hesitant. He FINALLY (like 5 minutes later) chose the spool of thread. It means he'll have a long life ahead of him. He then chose a golf ball so it looks like we've also got an athlete on our hands.
I love being able to share in Tony's culture and love that we can carry on traditions with our own family.
That is so cool! I love that you guys keep the cultural traditions alive. I'm sure Oliver will cherish those as he grows older.
